BRAINERD Minnesota--Charlie Henderson's six strong innings were not enough for the Lunkers as the Border Cats come from behind, scoring four unanswered, taking the opener 4-2.
Aaron Sapp (5-2) ran into a jam in the eighth inning as the Border Cats loaded the bases with only one out for Ty Wosleger. First pitch swinging, Scheffer bounced one gently to second. Berge, trying to turn two, threw underneath the glove of Stephen Wickens, allowing not only one, but two Border Cats runs to come home, giving them a 4-2 lead, all they would need to get the win.
The Lunkers started the scoring in the fourth when, with the bases loaded, Matt Hillsinger drove home two runs on a single up the middle.
Henderson made one bad pitch on the evening in his six innings of four hit baseball, but Tanner Nivins made Henderson's lone mistake count. One pitch after Henderson hit Ben Scheffer on an 0-2 count, he grooved a fastball to Nivins. The All-Star center fielder turned on the pitch, sending a screaming drive deep down the left field line, just inside the foul pole, for a game-tying two-run home run--his fifth of the season.
Brad Delatte, assuming the closer role for the departed Drew Erwin, came on with two on and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, getting Matt Hillsinger to strike out to end the inning. He followed up his cameo in the eighth with a perfect ninth, collecting his second save of the season.
The loss for the Lunkers is their third straight, as they continue to drop from the top of the North Division's second half standings.
The series resumes tomorrow night from Stewart C. Mills Field with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
