Lunkers Battery Lead Team To 3-1 Victory In Opener

July 15, 2010

David Allbritton's two-run home run in the second inning was all Kyle Teague needed, as the Lunkers starter returned to his All-Star form, leading the Lunkers to a 3-1 victory against the Thunder Bay Border Cats.

Kyle Teague (3-2) picked up his first win since June 20 at St. Cloud, going seven inninngs, giving up one unearned run on three hits, striking out nine while walking only one. Teague's outing was highlighted by his final frame--the bottom of the seventh inning--where he struck out all four batters he faced, after Ken Battiston reached on a strike out-wild pitch to begin the inning.

While the Lunkers offensive ineptitude made it interesting, Allbritton's first home run of the season gave the Lunkers a lead they would not surrender.

Michael Woytek (2-3) was the tough luck losing pitcher for Thunder Bay, as he went seven strong innings, allowing only two runs on two hits.

The Lunkers got some insurance in the top of the eight on a couple of gifts. Tommy Reyes, with one out, hit a line drive to center field which rolled by the diving center fielder for the Border Cats, Jeff Deblieux, leading to a triple. Then, on a 1-2 count to Chadd Krist, Border Cats All-Star reliever, Zak Miller, threw a fastball that got past catcher, Taylor Honeycutt, allowing Reyes to come home, moving the score to 3-1.

After Teague's seven innings, the Lunkers picked up two scoreless innings from their bullpen, including the ninth inning from Ray Black, who picks up his seventh save of the season.

With the win, the Lunkers assure themselves at least another day with, at least, a share of the second half North division lead.

The two will meet for the final time in Thunder Bay tomorrow at 6:35 as the Lunkers look to sweep the Border Cats in the series, and in their home park, Port Arthur Stadium, in the 2010 season.
