Late Lunkers Surge Shunned By MoonDogs

July 14, 2010

MANKATO Minnesota--The Mankato MoonDogs, for the first time all series, held on to a lead as they took the final game of their three game series with the Lunkers, 6-4.

Jordan Steranka's fourth inning, three-run home run off of Charlie Henderson (1-2) gave the MoonDogs a lead they would not surrender. They tacked on one more that inning, to jump ahead 4-0.

The Lunkers, after Levi Ferguson's first home run of the season in the eighth inning, cut their deficit to one, but the MoonDogs scored two in the bottom of the eighth, giving them the insurance they needed to pick up the win.

Blake Schwartz (2-2) went seven strong innings for Mankato, giving up only two runs--one earned--striking out six without walking anyone. He worked effectively and efficiently for Mankato this afternoon, throwing jut over ten pitches per inning.

Charlie Henderson pitched well, but picked up the loss after going six innings, giving up four runs--three earned--striking out five against no walks. One swing of the bat--Steranka's home run--tarnished an otherwise strong outing from Henderson's.

The Lunkers had an opportunity late. With Tim Fangman on the mound, pinch-hitter, Mick Gaston, with the tying run on first, hit into a game ending double play, sealing the victory for Mankato.

The Lunkers head home tonight, before waking up tomorrow morning continuing their road trip to Thunder Bay for two games. Tomorrow's game at Port Arthur Stadium is scheduled to begin at 6:35 eastern time.
