Border Cats Bats On Display, Take Opener

July 7, 2010

BRAINERD Minnesota--The Thunder Bay Border Cats, last in the league in hitting, whipped out a season high 15 hits en route to an 8-3 victory in the series opener.

Brainerd's rivals from North of the border seized control early, scoring seven runs on nine hits in the first two innings.

Only one starter for Thunder Bay failed to collect a hit--Taylor Honeycutt--though he did draw three walks.

Brian Russell (0-3) picked up the loss, failing to get beyond the second inning.

Thunder Bay's ace, Eric Brown (3-1), was unimpressive in the win, lasting only five innings, battling control issues, walking four and nearly throwing more balls than strikes.

The only Lunker with multiple hits was Stephen Wickens, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a walk. The highlight of the night, though, was his scoreless ninth inning on the mound, as the Lunkers' everyday shortstop faced the minimum three hitters, inducing a double play and a weak fly ball to right field to record his outs.

Chadd Krist and Levi Ferguson collected a double and a triple, respectively, the team's only two extra-base hits.

The series concludes tomorrow night at Stewart C. Mills Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
