Different Night, Same Story, Duluth Takes Opener

July 2, 2010

BRAINERD Minnesota--Different night, but strangely identical story as the Lunkers fall to Huskies 7-4.

A high fly ball into the dark blue night sky off the bat of Zeke DeVoss in the top of the ninth was lost by Matt Hillsinger and dropped ten steps behind him, allowing the tying run to score. Jeff Reynolds singled right after, scoring two. The Huskies added another to take a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

The winning pitcher was Sam Briend (3-0), who pitched a scoreless eighth.

Drew Smith (0-3) picks up the loss, giving up all four runs on five hits in the ninth inning.

On June 21, these two teams met for the first time, and the Huskies scored three in the ninth inning on two fly balls lost in the twilight sky. The final score? 7-4. The winning pitcher? Sam Briend. The starting pitcher for Duluth? Conner Hulse.

In a losing effort, Tommy Reyes went 4-for-4 with a walk and made two very good plays in the field.

The series continues tomorrow in Duluth. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
