Pitching Pulls Through, Lunkers Collect Sweep

July 1, 2010

THUNDER BAY Ontario--Three second-inning runs, capped off by T.J. Berge's single, were enough to push the Lunkers past the Thunder Bay Border Cats in the series finale, 3-2.

Despite not scoring the rest of the game, a group effort from the pitching staff secured the victory. Brian Russell, the starter, went three innings, but he was backed up by six innings of hitless baseball from the bullpen, capped off by Ray Black, who picked up his second save in as many games.

Russ Hopkins got things going with a single into centerfield on an 0-2 count. He advanced to second on Tanner Nivins' errant through home, and came around to score the eventual game-winning run on Berge's single.

The win on Canaday Day, the 143rd anniversary of Canada's independence from British sovereignty, gives the Lunkers their second sweep of the season, and a three game winning streak--both firsts since their three-game sweep of Alexandria to begin the year.

The Lunkers return home tomorrow night to kick off the first game of a three-game series against the Duluth Huskies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. from Stewart C. Mills Field.
