Tough Breaks Hand Lunkers Loss

June 21, 2010

BRAINERD Minnesota--Mother Nature played a role in the first meeting between the Lunkers and Huskies this season, as two fly balls lost in the multi-colored sky led to three Husky runs in the ninth inning, as they took the game 7-4.

Jeff Reynolds hit a routine fly ball to center field, but as Levi Ferguson danced around, it was apparent he could not find the ball in sky, ultimately resulting in a leadoff double. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Reynolds came home on another lost fly ball, one hit deep to center field by Mark Threlkeld, who collected a triple.

The Lunkers showed great resiliency throughout the ball game, coming back from three different deficits, but they could not come back in the ninth, as Jason Whalen picked up his fourth save of the season after getting all three men he faced in the final frame.

Patrick Nathanson pitched six strong innings, giving up three runs on nine hits, striking out five without surrendering a walk. He received a no-decision.

Ian Horkley followed with two innings of one run baseball, before giving way to Jeff Bunch, making his twelfth appearance, but first on the mound. Bunch surrendered the disappearing fly balls, as he received the loss.

Sam Briend's two innings of relief helped earn him the win, as he followed Conner Hulse's six innings of three-run baseball.

At the plate, Levi Ferguson collected four hits and two stolen bases. In four plate appearances, Matt Hillsinger failed to pick up a hit, bringing his 11 game hitting streak to an end.

The two teams square off tomorrow night at 7:05 at Stewart C. Mills Field.
