WILLMAR Minnesota--A late inning surge from the Willmar Stingers (2-3) power them to 4-3 victory over the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers (3-3), who drop their third straight.
A Jeff Bunch suicide squeeze gave the Lunkers a two-run cushion heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, when Teague gave way to Matt Florer. Florer got himself into trouble, as he faced runners at second and third with nobody out, but proceeded to retire the next two hitters without surrendering a run. It appeared as if the inning was over when he induced a weakly hit ground ball to T.J. Berge, but Berge’s error extended the inning.
Pinch-hitting for Andrew Haake, Eduardo Gonzalez's double down the line tied the game and Zach Rowles' infield single gave the Stingers the lead.
Despite a one out walk by Levi Ferguson, followed by a stolen base, the Lunkers left him stranded in the ninth, as Daniel Zapata (1-0) closed out the ballgame to get the win.
Willmar’s rally wasted a second straight strong performance from Kyle Teague. In seven innings, the Oakland University product gave up only one run on four hits, striking out five.
Off the hook for the loss went David Carroll with Willmar’s three-run eighth. He pitched 7.1 innings, giving up only two earned runs.
The first ever series between these two teams continues tomorrow night at Stewart C. Mills Field in Brainerd, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
