The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers of the Northwoods Collegiate League announced today that a pair of players from Loyola Marymount University have signed contracts to play with the Lunkers this summer. The newest Lunkers are left-handed pitcher, Matt Florer, and shortstop, Joel Licon.
Florer, a 6-foot-3 freshman from Mission Viejo, Calif., has received valuable experience in his freshman season with the Lions. He has already made ten appearances out of the bullpen, which is the second most relief appearances of anyone on the team. He also ia tied for the team lead in saves (2).
A Diamond Bar, Calif. native, Joel Licon has established himself as an everyday player in manager Jason Gill's lineup. A 5-foot-10 freshman, Licon's natural position is shortstop, but his versatility allows him to play multiple positions in the infield.
"We are always excited to get players from the West coast," field manager Ryan Levendoski said. "They bring a different element to the game and how it is played."
Levendoski and owner Joel Sutherland will continue building the roster until play begins on June 2nd. The home opener will be on Thursday, June 3rd at Stewart C. Mills Field. Game time is at 7:05 pm.
