(Brainerd Lakes Area) - The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers announced today that Minnesota Twins legend Tony Oliva will be on hand to throw out the first pitch when they open their season on Thursday, June 3 at Stewart C. Mills Field. Oliva will also be the keynote speaker at the Lunkers Home Opener Luncheon presented by Cub Foods taking place at the Legacy on Thursday, June 3 at 11:30am.
Oliva played 15 years of professional baseball at the Major League level, all of which with the Minnesota Twins. During his career, Oliva was an eight-time All-Star, three-time American League batting champion and won the 1964 Rookie of the Year Award in almost unanimous fashion, gaining 19-of-20 first place votes.
"Tony is such an important part of baseball history in this state with all of his accomplishments both as a player and a coach," Lunkers owner Joel Sutherland said. "He was not only one of the elite players in Major League Baseball for the better part of a decade, but he is an all-around great guy and we couldn't be more thrilled to have him," Sutherland said
The announcement of Oliva illustrates the level of commitment the Lunkers have shown to bringing in quality family entertainment at affordable prices. "Last year we brought a new team, a new look and a new spirit to the people of the Lakes Area. We want people to recognize that we aren't just a blip on the radar. We plan on being here a while," Sutherland concluded.
The Lunkers are members of the Northwoods League one of the finest summer collegiate leagues in the nation that had more than 135 players drafted into professional baseball in 2009.
