The Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers of the Northwoods Collegiate League announced today that a pair middle infielders have signed contracts to play with the Lunkers this summer. The newest Lunkers are Eric Charles of Purdue University and Jeff Bunch of the University of North Dakota.
Charles, a sophomore from Zionsville, Indiana, is off to a great start for the Boilermakers this season after picking up 3rd Team All-Big Ten and Freshman All-American honors in 2009. He is currently second on the team in runs batted in (21) and fifth in batting average (.342). Charles is also a threat on the basepaths, ranking third on the team in stolen bases (7).
Bunch is currently an everyday player for the Fighting Sioux. Coming off a two-year stint at Mt. San Jacinto College, Bunch hit .379 en route to earning second-team All-Foothill Conference honors in 2009.
"It’s always nice to add some guys who have experience playing at a high level," team owner/general manager Joel Sutherland said. "We feel that in order to succeed in this league you need depth and experience and these guys will definitely add both."
The Lunkers Field Manager Ryan Levendoski and Sutherland will continue building the roster until play begins on June 2nd. The home opener will be on Thursday, June 3rd at Stewart C. Mills Field. Game time is at 7:05 pm. For more information call the Lunkers Baseball office at (218) 824-3474 or visit the website at www.lunkersbaseball.com.
