Lunkers Bring Bats Across Border, Rout Border Cats

THUNDER BAY Ontario--Vince Bruno's grand slam in the fourth inning put the Lunkers ahead for the third time in the ballgame, but this time they did not look back en route to a 15-6 victory over the Thunder Bay Border Cats.
In the first game of the team's first extended road trip, the Lunkers greet their Canadian rivals rudely, pounding out 14 hits, eight of which went for extra bases.
In addition to his grand slam, his first home run of the season, Bruno collected two more hits, including an RBI double. He finished the game with a season high, 5 RBIs.
Chadd Krist's performance was just as impressive, as goes 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple, which helped him score three Lunker teammates. He came to the plate twice in attempt for the cycle, doubling and walking in his two tries.
Every Lunker reached base at least once in tonight's game in which they sent 12 batters to the plate in the eighth inning, in which they broke things open with six runs.
Brandon Baumgartner (2-2), who threw two innings of relief, is credited for the victory. In his second start, Connor Mielock was roughed up early in the fifth, leading to his exit, but continued to show great promise as he continues to shake off the rust on the hill.
The loss went to Paul Barton (0-3), who did not get past the fourth inning--the frame in which he surrendered the grand slam to Bruno.
Both teams sent five pitchers to the mound, thought Thunder Bay's changes were more out of need, while Brainerd's were in an effort to give pitchers work.
After an absence of more than two weeks, Nick Anderson returned to the mound, throwing a scoreless seventh inning.
Matt Hillsinger reclaimed the league lead in stolen bases (13), after swiping second in the second inning.
The series continues tomorrow night with Ian Horkley making his first start of the season for Brainerd, against lefty Zach Smith for Thunder Bay. First pitch is scheduled for 7:35 Eastern Time from Port Arthur Stadium.
