BRAINERD Minnesota--Patience, timely hitting, and a pair of sacrifice flies got the job done for the Lunkers as they defeated the Duluth Huskies, 4-2.
After falling behind 1-0, Mick Gaston, in his first at-bat as a Lunker, collected an RBI single up the middle to tie the game. After drawing three walks in the third, including one with bases loaded by Chadd Krist, Tommy Reyes hit a sacrifice fly to give the Lunkers a two run lead.
A few innings later, T.J. Berge added a sacrifice fly, regaining the two-run advantage.
Connor Mielock (1-0) pitched well in his first start, going four planned innings, giving up only one run. The combination of Aaron Sapp, Juan Padilla, Brandon Baumgartner, and Ray Black shut down the Huskies, setting it up for Drew Smith to pick up his third save of the season.
The Lunkers begin a three game series, playing the first two at home, tomorrow night against the Willmar Stingers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
